I'm here because Your Humble Webmaster needed another hat.

Eius magnificentia est magnum.

Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the Beast, for it is the number of a man and his number is six hundred threescore and six.  (Revelations 13:18)

"The driving force behind black magic is the hunger for power.  Its ultimate aim was stated (to Adam and Eve) . . . by the serpent in the Garden of Eden . . . 'Ye shall not surely die: for God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof (the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil), then your eyes shall be opened and ye shall be as gods" . . . the black magician's ambition is to wield supreme power over the entire universe . . . No one is a black magician in his own eyes . . . Man can make himself God because he has the divine spark within him.  He is a miniature image of God and God is man writ large . . . The magician masters (the great moving forces of the universe) by experiencing them, by absorbing them into his own being and subjecting them to his will . . . He must be able to focus the whole force of his being on a single aim, a single idea.  He trains his powers of imagination and concentration to an abnormal pitch of efficiency by various techniques. The importance of concentration in magic is reflected in the old belief that you can recognize a magician by the fixed stare of his eyeballs.  To a magician good and evil go round in a wheel that is one thing and not many.  The complete man, who has mastered all things, has vanquished Nature and mounted higher than the heavens. He has reached the center where man becomes God.  The achievement of this is the Great Work, the supreme magical operation which may take a lifetime (or many) to achieve.  The parallel in alchemy is the making of the Philosopher's Stone, believed to have the power to turn base metals into gold.  The stone was also the spiritual transformation of man from an earthly impurity to one of heavenly perfection."                                                                                                                                                                                                                            - The Black Arts

Michael commands all Angels and the Army of God. He has three main offices as known from scripture and tradition:

The first is to combat the Devil;
The second is to call all from life on Earth at the hour of death to their judgement and to escort the faithful to Heaven;
The third is to be a champion of all Christians and of the Church itself.

Hey, isn't this page supposed to be about the Great Beast?

Inscribed on the Emerald Tablet (said to be engraved with Phoenician characters) which according to legend was found in a cave-tomb by either Sara, wife of Abraham, or Alexander the Great, clutched in the hands of the corpse of Hermes Trismegistus, builder of the Giza pyramids.  The above inscription (in Latin 'ut supra et infra'), a paraphrase from the Tablet's first sentence, is the foundation of astrology.

Aleister Crowley believed he was the reincarnation of the great magicians Eliphas Levi (who died four months before his own nativity) and Count Alessandro di Cagliostro, as well as the Borgia Pope Alexander VI.

In 1899 as preparation for performing a six month long magical working known as the Abramelin  operation, Crowley purchased Boleskine House, a manor south of Inverness near the village of Foyers by the shore of Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. Did the Beast ever spot the Monster?

Eliphas Levi published his two volume study Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie (Dogma and Ritual of High Magic) in 1855-6.

Aleister Crowley, The Wickedest Man In The World, was an English occultist, magical esoteric theorist and practitioner, chess prodigy, poet, painter, novelist, mountaineer, intrepid world traveler (walking across both the Sahara Desert and China), unabashed self-promoter, marvelous raconteur when he chose to be, bisexual orgiast, and dope fiend.  He founded the religion of Thelema ('the will' in Greek), identifying himself as the prophet chosen to lead mankind into the Æon of Horus. He appears on the cover of the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band  album by the Beatles.  He may have been the father-in-law of POTUS 41 and the grandfather of 43. Crowley's case for quadragamous bliss:

" I have found having two wives a problem as they grow insanely jealous of each other. Three present a different problem as two always compare notes while you're with the third.  Four is the ideal number, it being a crowd and a crowd can be neglected. "

An ode of his own

When as a boy at the tender age of eleven the young Aleister to be was told that a cat has nine lives, he realized it would be very near impossible to kill one.

"I caught a cat and after having administered a large dose of arsenic, I chloroformed it, stabbed it, cut its throat, smashed its skull, hanged it above the gas jet and when it had been pretty thoroughly burnt, drowned it and threw it out the window so that the fall might remove the ninth life. The operation was successful. I was genuinely sorry for the animal, but I simply forced myself to carry out the experiment in the interests of science."

Esophus Island is located to the east of the center of the Hudson River channel, 84 miles north of the waterway's mouth at the Upper Bay in New York City. It is approximately 1500 feet long and roughly 1200 feet offshore, southwest of Norrie Point in the hamlet of Staatsburg in Dutchess County on the east  shore and opposite the town of Esopus in Ulster County on the west shore. There is a beach on the southeast side and shoals at the north end. The island is wooded with outcrops of rock. It is now part of Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park and of the Hudson River Greenway Water Trail.

Aleister Crowley spent a hermetic retreat of 40 days and 40 nights here (which he spelled "Oesopus") in 1918, translating the 4th century Chinese philosophical text Tao Te Ching, meditating and painting Thelemic graffiti on the rocks with red paint. Friends had given him money to buy a tent, a canoe and provisions but instead of food he bought the paint, brushes and rope for rappelling, saying that he would be "fed by ravens".

Aleister Crowley was born into a wealthy family;  his father was heir to the Crowley Brewery fortune and became a lay preacher in the fundamentalist Pilgrim Brethren sect. Edward Sr. died in 1887, leaving his young son with a considerable inheritance.  After his University studies Aleister joined the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn as a Neophyte in 1898, taking the name Brother Perdurabo (Latin for "I will endure to the end").  Other members included the writers W.B. Yeats, Algernon Blackwood and Arthur Machen.  Upon becoming an Adeptus Minor he  tried to wrest the leadership away from Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers as they waged a magical vendetta against each other - Mathers summoning a vampire to kill Crowley, who retaliated by conjuring up Beelzebub to attack his nemesis in Paris.  Finally expelled from the Golden Dawn,  Aleister founded his own organization, the Argentium Astrum (SIlver Star) in 1907.  In 1912 he became the British head of the German based Order of the Templars of the Orient (O.T.O) and was bestowed the title of Supreme And Holy King Of Ireland, Iona And All The Britains That Are In The Sanctuary Of The Gnosis. He achieved the rank of Magus in 1916 through a observance of his own design by baptizing a toad as Jesus Christ and then crucifying it. He set up the Sacred Abbey of Thelema on Sicily at Cefalu in 1920, but was expelled by the Mussolini government three years later due to rumors (well founded) of a multitude of abominations occurring there. Ravaged by heroin addiction in later years, his last words were reported to be "I am perplexed".

A least one Scarlet Woman was required when the libidinous master practiced Sex-Magic rites. Morphine, cocaine and hashish were also generously employed.

Undead and loving it!

The Gnome of Death presides, it's true. We watch from a corner (overinformed and underknowledged) while our generals hump the planet and our priests bless them on their way, while lizard kings do a death grip waltz on the graves from the same dance done before and the tribal legions raise their banners one against the other, while the blood and the bones collect waist deep around the men who proclaim each absurd war holy. Informed sources said today that God is on our side. Although the Lord was not around to comment, Death had this to say: "Kiss my rumpled ass and sing power. There are no fair fights and only I can save you from love gone wrong." It is stylish to despair. Still, imagination holds out - for what isn't, and never was, but might, some say, come to be. It's a fool's vision perhaps, but they have found it in caves, on ruined walls and in the notebooks of dead young poets. Dumb dreams of the artist depicting a planet in love with itself, where the Gnome is silly for a time. Where men can tweak his beard and dare to be naked and vulnerable, loving and inefficient, and without the borrowed power of death over one another. It's true the Gnome has his way over man in the end; the game isn't fair, it just is. Still, there's no reason to serve the dark bastard, to run his errands for him, to extend a soulless kingdom while we have the light. For if death is his threat, life is our revenge. Sing: "Kiss your own dead ass and be damned. There are no real fights among men, and no one needs saving from love."

Ego numquam bibere vinum.

There were allegations (albeit unsubstantiated) reported by the London Sunday Express in 1922 that the Great Beast ate two of his Sherpa porters on a Himalayan expedition. This occurred during either his assault on K2 in 1902 or on Kangchenjunga in 1905, respectively the second and third highest mountains in the world.  Both attempts at reaching the summit were unfortunately unsuccessful.  Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.  Love is the law, love under will.

Crowley published his Book of the Law, or  Liber Legis, in 1904 (the revealed doctrine of the new Thelemic order as dictated to him by the spirit Aiwass), Moonchild  (an occult thriller) in 1917, and Magick in Theory and Practice  in 1929, the first such treatise written in centuries and generally considered the finest single volume on the subject.

In Jewish tradition the secret name of infinite power is one of the personal names of the God of the Old Testament. Called the Tetragammaton, it was transliterated in four letters as YHVH (yod he vau hewritten right to left in Hebrew as shown above) and articulated as Yahweh.  It was spoken aloud once a year by the High Priest when he entered the Tabernacle's and later the Temple's Holy of Holies on the Day of Atonement.  The four letters represent the four elements.  Yod is the Father, represents Fire and constitutes the Will.  He (1st) is the Mother, Water and Understanding.  Vau is the Son, Air and Mind. He (2nd) is the Daughter (and both twin sister and bride of Vau), Earth and Body.  Yet even more powerful is the 72 syllable Shemhamphorash, derived from Exodus 14: 19-21.  Each of these verses has 72 letters written in boustrophedon style (verse 19 right to left, verse 20 left to right underneath 19 and verse 21 right to left again under 20).  The first syllable consists of three letters, the first one in each verse.  This pattern is repeated through the 72nd.  Moses spoke this name of God to part the waters of the Red Sea, allowing the Israelites to cross.  Its pronunciation is unknown today.

Paris 1924 - Crowley underwent the prolonged and grueling carnal ceremony known as the Great Ordeal , the path to his elevation from Magus to Ipsissimus (Sphere of God, the highest grade attainable). Also participating in this ritual were Frank Harris (author of the licentious multi-volume autobiography My Life and Loves), his wife Nellie O'Hara and her friend, a married American woman vacationing abroad alone. Pauline Robinson Pierce returned to the United States that October. On June 8, 1925 she gave birth to a daughter.
